Web Jargon 101

Being new to the intensely complicated yet wonderful world of technology can be a challenge. How do I know? I’m in that stage right now. For those of you who understand my position or may even be in this very position yourselves, I’ve asked the Top Draw team to come to our rescue.

Let’s start with the basics, the web jargon that we need to understand before anything else makes sense. How many of these terms do you already know?Huh?

  • AdWords: Google’s advertising product; these are the listings that appear in the colored boxes when you do a Google search; I learned that these online paid ads have a character limit of 130
  • Back End: the portion of a website that web developers work with; they handle and build the site
  • Browser: the program used to view, download and access documents on the Internet (ex. Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer)
  • CMS (Content Management System): a platform where a website is built, which allows for the management of  content in a collective and collaborative environment (at Top Draw, our CMS of choice is WordPress)
  • Cookie: a data file that is placed on a user’s hard drive by a web server (usually without us even knowing or consenting) that collects information about activity on a site
  • Design vs. Development: design is the creation of a site’s layout, color scheme, and graphics; development is the programming and coding that brings the design to life online
  • Domain: the name of the website or URL that is owned by an individual or company (ex. www.topdraw.com); check out Karim’s blog post for more information about domains and other web assets
  • Front End: the appearance of a website; the graphic design and HTML portion
  • Host: a company that provides “space” on a server (where their website resides) to make a website accessible on the World Wide Web
  • HTML (Hypertext Markup Language): the main language used to structure text into different forms so that web pages and other information can be displayed on a web browser
  • Hyperlink: text or graphics that, when clicked on, take the user to another web page (ex. www.topdraw.com)
  • SEM (Search Engine Marketing): paying search engines to place specific Internet ads next to relevant, related topics
  • SEO (Search Engine Optimization): researching and using keywords to obtain a high ranking in online search results
  • URL (Uniform Resource Locator): the “address” of where a page lives on the internet (ex. https://www.topdraw.com)
  • Web Server: the hardware and/or software that delivers requested web pages
  • Website Usability: a measure of how easy it is for an individual to use a website
  • 301 Redirects: a command that redirects a user from an old url to a new address where it has moved (this is like a change of address form)

Now that you understand the basic, commonly used web jargon, you’re better equipped to learn more advanced, specialized terms and phrases.
