Junior Achievement Job Shadow Day

Top Draw was delighted to participate in the 2012 edition of Junior Achievement’s Job Shadow Day, where a dozen Edmonton area students spent the day shadowing employees at local businesses. The purpose of the event is to help students realize the education and skills they need to join the workforce and to connect students with leaders who will help mentor and shape them into our future business leaders.

We had the privilege of hosting a student named Daniel, who is planning a career in IT Security. While there is a bit of a gap between his business dreams and what I do at Top Draw on a regular basis, with the help of the team, we were able to keep him fairly busy for the entire day.

Daniel spent most of his morning in client meetings, learning about planning, preparing and presenting to clients. We then whisked him off to one of our favourite spots, Original Joes, for a quick lunch and then back to the office for another client meeting. Lucky for Daniel, we have some of the best clients in town (thank you to those of you who allowed Daniel to sit in on your meetings).

The afternoon meeting was followed by a necessary coffee break. White mocha in hand, Daniel and Taylor headed off to our new meeting space to discuss website design for the company Daniel is hoping to create as a part of JA’s Company Program. For his final hour, Daniel and I discussed the importance of setting expectations, giving and receiving feedback and preparing for staff evaluations.

I thoroughly enjoyed introducing this young man to our clients and staff. Daniel’s professionalism, poise and the ease with which he joined the Top Draw team underscores the calibre of students that come out of the Junior Achievement program. Adriel said it best when he described JA participants as “super kids”. Junior Achievement students are focused, passionate and have big dreams for their futures. We are proud to support such a great organization that helps talented students achieve their goals.

We wish you all the best Daniel. Thanks for spending the day with us!
